From June 1997 through January 1999, Ernie Jones was Deputy Campaign Manager for former Representative Roy Barnes' successful campaign to be governor of Georgia . In this position, Jones promulgated constituent and grassroots strategy for candidate Barnes. This strategy included working with key opinion leaders (political leaders, the clergy and business leaders) in order to circulate the candidate's position on various issues. During the campaign, Ernie Jones' communications skills were called into play frequently, whether it was producing campaign materials or representing candidate Barnes at various public events. His organizational skills also were put to good use as he established statewide field operations for Barnes. In addition, he developed position papers and advised Barnes on issues affecting the minority community.
Prior to joining Barnes' gubernatorial campaign, Jones developed his skills by managing other political campaigns. He was Campaign Manager for a successful bid and subsequent reelection of a member of Congress from Georgia. Prior to managing that Congressional campaign, Ernie Jones' political experience included the Bill Clinton-Al Gore presidential campaign in 1992, where he served as Special Assistant to Campaign Manager Harold Ickes Jr. He also served as media advisor to Congressman Ed Towns (D-NY) in 1992, and media specialist for Governor Mario Cuomo reelection in 1990. Ernie has also served on numerous community foundation and organization boards.
From 1978 until 1992, Jones served as Senior Editor for three Speakers of the House in the New York State Assembly, where he devised and initiated a communications program for 13 members of the Majority Conference. He also has held the position of press secretary for a member of the New York City Council and director of communications for Congressman Alton R. Waldon, Jr. (D-NY).
Ernie Jones, a native of Trinidad & Tobago, and a 26-year resident of Brooklyn , N.Y. , received his undergraduate education from Marietta College , Marietta , Ohio , and hopes to pursue graduate studies in Urban Planning. He and his wife, Nancy,are proud parents of a 13 year old son, Evan. |
